The Size of your air pump is important
Sizing of your septic air pump or septic aerator is extremely important and should not be taken lightly. Although air pumps and air pump manufacturers change over the years, the size of your replacement air pump should remain the same. This will insure that your septic system will function as it was originally designed and tested to perform. Please use our information offered on this site, gathered through our many years of experience, to help you choose the correct septic air pump for your individual application. Which Type Of Septic Air Pump Should I purchase?
Linear Diaphragm septic air Pumps
If you have a linear air pump it would have a shape similar to a toaster. This style of air pump uses diaphragms to create air flow and pressure. The quality of those diaphragms, and the application for which your air pump is used, will directly determine how long they will last. There is a misconception that all air pumps are the same, which is far from the truth.
Some linear diaphragm air pumps will need to have their diaphragms replaced every 18 months, but the quality air pumps should last 3 to 5 years before diaphragm replacement would be necessary. For this reason, we recommend the Hiblow Linear Septic Air Pumps. This is by far the most popular septic air pump used by most of the aerobic manufacturers today. The Hiblow diaphragms are very durable and can withstand the higher backpressures they will be subject to in your septic system.
Many linear air pumps are specifically manufactured for the water garden industry and will not work well as a septic air pump. Septic air pumps must force air through some type of diffuser assembly into a combination of sewage and sludge, which causes more head pressure than many water garden air pumps can endure. Please pay special attention and remember, although you can use septic air pumps in your water garden you should not use water garden air pumps in your septic or aeration system. Even if externally they might look similar, internally they tend to be very different.
Rotary Vane Septic Air Pumps
Rotary vane septic air pumps are usually cylindrical in shape. This type of septic air pump is usually more durable than most other air pumps available. The Gast AT05 septic aerator has been the work horse on many aerobic systems for lots of years. Vane replacement usually needs to be done every 6 to 7 years, and the motor should last 10 to 15 years.
The disadvantage of a rotary vane pump is simply they are extremely noisy and use more than twice the electricity than a linear air pump would use.
