What are the differences in Linear/Diaphragm air pumps?

The primary difference that separates the low priced diaphragm air pumps from the really good ones are the way the diaphragms are constructed and how long they will last. It is a common misconception when shopping for an air pump to look at the manufacturer’s warranty and think that if it has a “limited 3 year warranty” that it must be a pretty good pump. That is usually not the case.

Read the Fine Print: Many of these low priced Linear pumps with a limited 3 year warranty will not cover any of the moving parts. Their own warranty paperwork states that the pump has a 3 year warranty excluding any moving parts. For example one new low priced Linear pump on the market offered by a reputable seller has a warranty sheet that states that “the pump has a limited 3 year warranty, however the warranty is invalid unless you replace the diaphragms at least once every year.” Naturally the moving parts (Diaphragms and Rod blocks) are what need to eventually be replaced in all linear pumps. Don’t be afraid to ask the vendor about their warranty and what does it cover.

Our best linear air pumps are usually running 24 hours per day and going 4 to 5 years before their diaphragms need to be replaced. That is very good for a linear pump. If you purchase a lower quality linear pump, for let’s say $50 less, that uses diaphragms that cost $100, and replace them every year, within 5 years you added an additional $500 to the cost of your pump. That does not include any labor to do the job. If you have to hire someone to replace those diaphragms you can easily figure at least another $500. That doesn’t factor in the aggravation of doing it or having it done and the down time that your aerobic system isn’t working. And that is also assuming there will always be parts available for the lower price air pumps that usually aren’t around very long.

You should also consider that when you replace your linear air pump on an aerobic system that it should be with a brand that is used by an aerobic manufacturer. They will not use the lower priced pumps as they are responsible to fully warranty those pumps for a period of 2 years, as required some states.

In summary if you are interested in purchasing a linear air pump you should consider purchasing only those air pumps used by the Aerobic Manufacturers. Ask the vendor about their warranty and what it covers and if the price seems to be really low in comparison to others on a pump nobody has ever heard of be careful. In addition ask them if the pump they are selling is used by any Aerobic Manufacturers. Purchasing those types of pumps will cost you a great deal of hidden expenses and a lot of headaches.

At Septic Solutions we only offer the quality linear pumps used by Aerobic Manufacturers that have been tested and tried on those systems for many years. We offer you the best prices on the best pumps.
